Positive Affirmation Mural at MAPA Bradford
The Positive Affirmation Mural at MAPA Bradford was more than just an art project — it became a powerful journey of creativity, confidence, and community for the girls who took part. From the very first day, when they donned aprons and prepared the wall with primer, the excitement was tangible. For many of them, it was their first time painting on a concrete wall, and the process quickly turned into both a learning experience and a joyful adventure.
Over the course of several sessions, the mural came to life step by step. Together, the girls sketched and painted the affirmation “JUST BE YOU”, set against a bold, African-themed design that reflected both their heritage and the mission of the community centre. Each colour added carried meaning: orange for warmth and creativity, yellow for hope and optimism, blue for calm and confidence, red for passion and strength, and green for growth and renewal. These layers of colour not only made the mural vibrant, but also became a visual representation of the girls’ individuality and resilience.
The creative process was as important as the finished artwork. Along the way, discussions about resilience, identity, and self-expression gave the girls space to reflect on their own journeys. Outlining, detailing, and adding finishing touches required focus and teamwork, building both their confidence and their sense of ownership. Each session strengthened their connection to one another and to the space they were transforming.
When the mural was finally completed and coated with an anti-graffiti seal to protect it for years to come, the sense of pride was overwhelming. The words “JUST BE YOU” now stand boldly on the wall of MAPA Bradford, serving as a daily reminder for the girls and the wider community that individuality is valuable, powerful, and worth celebrating. The project not only left behind a vibrant piece of public art, but also a legacy of creativity, empowerment, and self-belief for everyone involved.
